altafiber internet Plans, Pricing, and Review (2024)

What is altafiber?

altafiber is a Fioptics TV and internet service provider (ISP) with coverage in parts of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Its plans are fast thanks to fiber connections, and there are no data caps.

Formerly Cincinnati Bell, altafiber’s internet connection speed goes up to 1 GB in most service areas, but 2 GB speeds are also available in very select areas. All plans can be bundled with the Fioptics TV service that works via TiVo. Home phone services are also available.

altafiber internet plans and prices

Fiber internet plans from altafiber start at a competitive $39.99/mo. for 400 Mbps. The plans do not require contracts and do not have data caps. Because of the faster fiber connection, they offer symmetrical upload and download speeds without lag issues.

Methodology

We rated the largest internet providers in the U.S. for 2024. Each provider was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on over a dozen factors, including speed, cost, availability, fees, customer satisfaction, connection type and more. We also used data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to compare the average speed offered by internet companies in the U.S. to set a baseline for what is considered a good internet speed. Additionally, we analyzed data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) to understand how each ISP fares in customer service and perceived value.

How we reviewed altafiber

We rated altafiber a 3.6 of 5 in our provider scoring. The ISP scored high for its fast fiber speeds and low starting prices. Availability scored lower due to the small coverage area. An equipment rental fee of $10.99/mo. is required, which also lowered the overall score.

Best altafiber internet plans

You can pick from four main fiber internet plans with home Wi-Fi, all without data caps. In limited areas, there is a 2 GB option as well. The price for the 400 Mbps and 600 Mbps are guaranteed for 12 and 24 months respectively when you set up eBill. The 1 GB plan at $69.99/mo. is cheaper than most altafiber competitor plans by $10–20/mo. That price is guaranteed for 36 months with an eBill setup.

All altafiber plans require a $10.99/mo. equipment rental fee for the modem and router, which is a bit higher than other ISPs. Every plan is eligible for altafiber’s Whole Home Wi-Fi for an additional $15/mo., which uses wireless mesh technology powered by eero technology.

Fioptics 400 Mbps Internet – Most budget-friendly plan

The cheapest plan offered by altafiber offers 400 Mbps of fiber speed for under $40/mo., which is a great price for matching download and upload speeds. If you have a mid-sized home with two to three heavy internet users, this plan is a good option. The cost is similar to cable provider pricing, making it a better choice if altafiber’s fiber network is available in your area.

Fioptics 600 Mbps Internet – Best for large, connected homes

This plan offers 600 Mbps of symmetrical upload and download speeds to keep a large smart home connected with four-plus internet gamers, streamers and people working from home. The $49.99/mo. is cheaper than similar plans from other major providers.

Fioptics 1 Gig Internet – Best for the fastest speeds

If you have a home with 20 or more connected devices and heavy power users, altafiber’s Internet 1000 high-speed internet is for you. Priced under $70/mo., it is cheaper than similar plans from other ISPs, beating cable and even some DSL pricing.

altafiber TV and internet packages

altafiber will package your internet plan with the TV package of your choice. You can even build your own altafiber TV package with the channels you prefer. By bundling internet and TV, you will have some savings in the $10–20/mo. range. If you just want a few channels like news and main live channels, the Basic TV with 600 Mbps internet plan is the same price as the internet plan itself, at $49.99/mo., so you are getting your TV for free. You can pick one of the TV plans to add to any speed plan.

TV & internet bundleStarting price*No. of live channels
600 Mbps Internet + Basic TV$49.99/mo.55+
600 Mbps Internet + Preferred TV$89.99/mo.110+
600 Mbps Internet + Elite TV$94.99/mo.305+

altafiber vs. other internet providers

There are a few internet providers within the same service areas as altafiber, with similar pricing for very different types of internet connections.

  • Altafiber vs. Spectrum: Spectrum is the largest competitor, offering comparable pricing and speeds but through a cable/fiber hybrid connection.
  • Altafiber vs. Hughesnet: Hughesnet is a satellite provider that offers slower speeds and can suffer from lag when streaming or gaming. The speeds also do not exceed 100 Mbps, making it a hard choice for large and ultra-connected homes.
  • Altafiber vs. T-Mobile: T-Mobile’s 5G Home Internet is also available in the same footprint, offering up to 245 Mbps in speed for a flat rate of $60/mo. This is a fixed wireless connection, meaning that you need to be close to a T-Mobile tower to get service.
