How do you know if you fail a TB test? ›

If you have an Mtb infection, the skin around the injection site should start to swell and harden within 48 to 72 hours . This bump, or induration, may also change color. But the induration's size, not the color, will determine your results. An induration of less than 5 millimeters (mm) is a negative result.

If a person does not return within 48-72 hours for a tuberculin skin test reading, a second test can be placed as soon as possible. There is no contraindication to repeating the TST, unless a previous TST was associated with a severe reaction.

A “positive” TB blood test result means you probably have TB germs in your body. Most people with a positive TB blood test have latent TB infection. To be sure, your doctor will examine you and do a chest x-ray. You may need other tests to see if you have latent TB infection or active TB disease.

Have you ever had a positive TB skin test? Have you ever been vaccinated with BCG? Have you ever had close contact with persons known or suspected to have active TB disease?

Results. Redness alone at the skin test site usually means you haven't been infected with TB bacteria. A firm red bump may mean you have been infected with TB bacteria at some time. The size of the firm bump (not the red area) is measured 2 to 3 days after the test to find out the result.

However, even use of the preferred skin test technique (intradermal injection of purified protein derivative via the Mantoux method) can lead to either false positive or false negative results.

TB can yield indeterminate results under two test observation conditions: a high response to the nil in negative control wells (high nil-control) or a low response to the mitogen in positive control wells (low mitogen-control).

After the test, you should avoid using bandages, putting on lotion, or scratching the test area because it may affect the results. You can wash the area with water, but do not wipe or scrub. If the area itches, put an ice cube or cold cloth on it.

Between 20 to 30% of people exposed to a person with active TB become infected. For that reason, doctors usually distinguish between infection (or a positive TB test) and an active infection. After you are infected, your immune system will attack the bacteria.

How Is Active TB Treated? If you have an active TB disease you will probably be treated with a combination of antibacterial medications for a period of six to 12 months. The most common treatment for active TB is isoniazid INH in combination with three other drugs—rifampin, pyrazinamide and ethambutol.

The infected person's immune system walls off the TB organisms. And the TB stays inactive throughout life in most people who are infected. This person would have a positive skin or blood test for TB but a normal chest X-ray or one that only shows past scarring from the disease.

The bacteria are still in your body, but they are not causing damage. However, latent TB bacteria can 'wake up' and become active in the future, making you ill. This can happen many years after you first breathe in TB bacteria.
