3. TID Water Supplements Drinking Water - City of Ashland, Oregon

  • Today the Water Division of the Public Works Department began supplementing our drinking water from Reeder Reservoir with Talent Irrigation District (TID) water. This is expected to continue through the end of July and is being done to maximize the amount of water Ashland has available while also maintaining the highest level of water quality possible. The snowpack in the Ashland watershed was lower than normal this past winter causing concerns about water supply levels later in the summer. Utilizing our available water as efficiently as possible will ensure Ashland water users have sufficient water supplies to meet their demands until wetter and cooler weather returns in the fall. Ashland’s primary water source is Reeder Reservoir, located in the mountains above Lithia Park. Reeder Reservoir receives its water from the Ashland watershed which begin at the peaks of Mt. Ashland and Wagner Butte and flow into the East and West Forks of Ashland creek before entering the reservoir. When water use in Ashland is greater than the flow from the two forks of Ashland creek, water levels in the reservoir begin to drop. This past week the flow out of the reservoir exceeded the flow into the reservoir so the volume of the reservoir is now less than 100% and decreasing daily. This is normal and happens every year but due to the lower than average snowpack, this drop began earlier this year than it has in the past. Ashland is very fortunate to have multiple water sources and...

  • Reeder Reservoir supplies water to the city of Ashland, Oregon. It is relatively small as the maximum storage behind the dam is 860 acre-feet or 280 million gallons of raw water with the overflow weirs in place. Reeder Reservoir is fed from snow melt and watershed rain runoff from Mount Ashland. Typically, the reservoir fills to the top and reaches capacity in April, stays full and spills over the overflow weirs at the dam through the end of May, and then the water level behind the dam slowly starts to fall until the rains begin again usually sometime in October. Theoretical drawdown of the reservoir begins the first of June and goes to "empty" in March. The reservoir never reaches "empty" because of rains that usually start in October. The predicted 50% reservoir level is October 15th. Anytime after October 15th without rains and with the reservoir at or below 50% would cause concern for water supply
