How do I figure out my wetsuit size? ›

If you are different sizes from top to bottom, the larger of the two sizes should still give you a very good fit as neoprene is super stretchy and should mould to your body shape.

From the United States. I find O'Neill's dresses tend to run a little smaller than their tops, and this one is no exception. It's easy to care for, and the print is lovely! However, I have fairly large biceps, so the sleeves are pretty tight, and there's no stretch at all to the fabric.

Contrary to everyday clothes, most wetsuits come in many different sizes. In addition, they cater to people with different body types. Wetsuit sizes are built up by combining body height and chest and waist width. You can verify this by measuring your height, weight, chest and waist sizes.

If the suit is too big, it might be easy to get into, but in the water, it's not going to function properly. All the gaps and extra material will hold more water and allow more water into the suit, making your body work much harder to stay warm.

Additionally, wetsuits may stretch slightly over time with repeated use, but this is usually minimal and does not result in significant shrinkage. Only when thrown into hot water, the wetsuit might shrink. Common ocean or pool water on the other hand does not impact the size of the wetsuit significantly.

Wetsuits need to be snug to do their job, but you have to be able to move freely and breathe while wearing it. Think of them as needing to be more form-fitting than tight. Try on your wetsuit before your first swim, surf, paddleboard or kite session, just to make sure you are comfortable.

THE O'NEILL FIT

It should be comfortably snug all over. If the suit fits too loose, there will be cold water entering the suit and you'll never stay warm. A suit that is too small or too big can cause rashing.

You can also take your weight into account for more accuracy. Here are some examples : If your height is around 1m80 and your weight is around 65/70kg, you can opt for a size M. If you are 1m80, but you are more stout (more than 80kg), you can choose a size L.

If you land between two sizes, or you're at the top of the size range and are unsure which would be best suited to you then we would always advise sizing up, wetsuits are already designed for a tighter fit without restricting your range of movement therefore its best to accommodate for this by sizing up.

So how to determine your size? Almost all wetsuit brands offer a large variety of sizes to fit different body types. Wetsuit sizes are a combination of your full height, chest circumference and waist width. If you're not sure what wetsuit size is best for you, use the SRFACE Size Finder.

Your wetsuit should feel close-fitting but not uncomfortable or overly-restrictive and you should be able to move in it. Wetsuits do feel slightly looser once you get in the water and water is allowed into them, too.

The specification is made with two numbers. 3/2 mm means, for example, that the neoprene has a thickness of 3 mm on the torso and 2 mm on the legs and arms. Most wetsuits have a difference of 1-2 mm, because the warmth effect is more important on the body and the flexibility on the arms and legs.

If it's too tight, your experience in the water won't be pleasant. When trying on in a store, the suit should feel tight but not restrictive. Once it's on correctly (not bunched up around the crotch or under the arms), there should be no air pockets or creases in the neoprene.
