Today we have a really neat recipe for you! It’s a homemade pretzel dog treat! I know what you’re thinking: why not just give my dog a regular old soft pretzel? Well, what would be the fun in that? This recipe is tailored especially for your pooch to bring it a bit more flavor. Heads up to our friends who have dogs with allergies, this one isn’t a hypoallergenic treat because of all the wheat. Homemade Pretzel Dog Treat Recipe

• 1 teaspoon brown sugar
• 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
• 2/3 cup broth (chicken, beef, veggie, whatever you choose)
• 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
• 3 tablespoons soy flour
• 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk
• 3/4 teaspoon Nu Salt(or other salt substitute. You can use regular salt too as long as you’re giving these in moderation, too much salt is bad for dogs)
• 1 beaten egg (set half aside)
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 3 tablespoons wheat germ (optional)

Directions

• Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
• In a small bowl, combine the yeast and sugar.Add a little bit of warm water to dissolve it.
• Mix the dry ingredients together. Add half of your beaten egg, the yeast mixture, the oil and the broth, and combine well.

• Add flour to a flat surface and knead the mixture until it forms a nice dough. Place the dough in a bowl coated with oil, cover it and let it rise until it’s about twice the original size.
• Take a bit in your hand, roll it out on your floured surface, then shape it into a pretzel.
• Place your pretzels on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

While they’re still warm, brush them with the rest of your beaten egg, then sprinkle with the wheat germ if desired. You can skip this step if you want. You can also sprinkle them with a little garlic powder or dried parsley.

Regarding the NuSalt, you can use regular salt if you want to, but too much salt in their diet can be really bad for them. Like all mammals, they do need a bit of salt here and there (unless your dog has a medical condition and your vet says otherwise). You can also use 2/3 cup water in place of the broth, I just thought the broth would liven things up a bit for your pooch.
