Founders Jerry Baldwin and Zev Siegl (both teachers), along with Gordon Bowker (a writer), were inspired to open the cafe by Alfred Peet, who started Peet's Coffee and Tea. Although this is commonly referred to as the original Starbucks location, it's really the second location for the first store: the first Starbucks opened in 1971 at 2000 Western Avenue. This first store only sold whole roasted beans, not brewed cups of coffee. The first store moved to the Pike Place location after five years, and that's where they first sold brewed coffee for customers. The store's original logo, with its topless mermaid, is still seen at this location, the only place where it's still used. The mermaid's breasts were first covered up by longer hair in 1987 before switching to the current iteration of the logo in 1992. The coffee chain now has more than 26,000 locations worldwide.
